A long time ago, during the Waitress No. 3 era, she and I had a temporary falling out (as in she wasn’t falling out of love with her boyfriend as fast as I wanted her to). During that time, I was listening to NPR on the radio on the way to Dallas. And there she was, being interviewed about one thing or another.

I was driving to Dallas yesterday
When I heard your voice on the radio
Just a sound bite from a crime scene
I confess
I still think about you when I’m driving
I wonder if you ever think of me
Am I still going in circles
What a mess

Chorus:
Do you miss those halcyon days
When life was hopeful and serene
You could talk for a million years
And I’d never know what you mean

I thought you moved back to California
As far away from here as you could get
Maybe you cared more than you thought
I don’t know
You sent a postcard from Mission Viejo
I’ve probably read it a thousand times
I guess I’m not over you yet
Does it show

Bridge:
Have you heard my new song
It’s playing on that same radio
I wrote it about the life we had
A long, long time ago

Chorus:
Do you miss those halcyon days
When life was hopeful and serene
You could talk for a million years
And I’d never know what you mean
